VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada is set to transform the Shivalayam Street, the Satyanarayana Puram main road and the VAMBAY Colony through proposals that emerged from the ‘Streets for People Challenge’ competition held last year. Municipal commissioner V Prasanna Venkatesh said the city would implement several of the proposals that emerged from the design competition.

The commissioner said these stretches would be transformed into pedestrian-friendly areas with vibrant public spaces through implementation of the design proposals made at the event.

He announced that the participants at the event, with registration ID VGA8233, VGA8856 and VGA4727, were awarded the first, second and third prize respectively for coming up with innovative ideas to revamp Shivalayam Street and the SN Puram main road.

Registration IDs VGA9171, VGA5196 and VGA7863 were awarded the first, second and third prize respectively for the proposals to transform the VAMBAY Colony as part of the Street Design Competition.

The commissioner said that with its continued focus on a transformative path, the city launched the design competition event to re-visualize its streets, on November 27 last. The competition provided an opportunity for top urban designers, young professionals and students from across the country to create pedestrian-friendly streets through innovative, inclusive, and quick solutions.

Additional commissioner (projects) and nodal officer for Vijayawada S4P, U. Sarada Devi, emphasized that as the next step, winners of the design competitions will present their solutions to top officials and hold consultations with citizens to refine the proposals further.

She stated that the key evaluation criteria focused on uniqueness, local context, practicality in implementation and inclusiveness to all users and reflected the aspirations of the community.

Imran Basha, city project coordinator from UN-Habitat, said the design proposals consisted of a series of initiatives to improve streets and public spaces for its citizens identified through a collaborative approach and the design proposals were evaluated by eminent and diversified panel members.
