Thrissur: The ruling dispensation in the country which is bound to protect the constitution is now trying to destroy it, feminist writer and professor of Political Thought at Jawaharlal Nehru University Nivedita Menon has said.
Speaking at the function to present Chintha Ravindran Award to professor and orator Sunil P. Elayidom at Thrissur on Saturday, she said that while former Prime Min-ister Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the consititution, and right wing leader Syama Prasad Mukherjee were on the same side when introducing the first constitutional amendment against abuse of freedom of speech and expression in 1951, a unity of such kind was not forthcoming on the political front of the country at present, she said.
“Now, those attacking the government are branded as anti-national with the aim to stifle their voices and silence them. The allegations and cases slapped against writers, journalists, academicians and activists who are boldly speaking out their mind out will not stand the test of the law. But at the same time massive campaigns are being run against those opposing the government with the intention to harass them and prevent them from being heard,” she said.
