ADILABAD: Villagers, especially farmers, have been agitating for long against the setting up of an ethanol factory at Gundampalli village in Dilawarpur mandal of Nirmal district. Their agitation took a new turn when police booked cases against the agitating farmers.

The villagers have been staging rasta rokos and vanta varpu to register their protest and alleging that not only the environment but groundwater would also get polluted by the ethanol factory.

“The ethanol factory will have a long-term negative impact on the lives of the people of Dilawarpur and its surrounding mandals,” they stressed.

Nirmal MLA Aleti Maheshwar Reddy alleged that the permission for the unit was granted by former minister Allola Indrakaran Reddy without bothering about environmental pollution. “I would take the farmers to Hyderabad and bring the issue to the notice of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy,” he said.

Maheshwar Reddy asked the police not to register cases against the agitating farmers and appealed to the farmers to maintain restraint for some time.
