CM flags Rs 1,000 crore project to build check dams across TN

Perambalur: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami disclosed here on Saturday that it is proposed to construct check dams across the state to improve groundwater potential at a cost of Rs 1000 crore. Under this project, the first 100 check dams will be constructed at a cost of Rs 350 crore this year, he said at a function to celebrate former Chief Minister and AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran's birth centenary year.

Mr. Palaniswami said that thanks to state efforts to upgrade science education, Tamil Nadu's scientific and technical manpower's quality will improve. The higher education row, which was 21 per cent in 2014, now stood at 44.30 per cent now, he emphasised.

The Chief Minister said that a new dam will be constructed across Kallar river at Visuwakudi in Perambalur district at an estimated cost of Rs 33 crore and a park will be developed at a cost of Rs 2 crore at the dam site, to develop a tourism spot there.

Secretary of the Tamil Development and Information department, R.Venkatesan welcomed the gathering, while Perambalur district collector Ms.V.Shantha proposed a vote of thanks.
