Telangana farmer dies waiting for urea
The shortage of urea in the state is a subject of acrimony between the TRS and the BJP.
Hyderabad: The death of a farmer in Dubbak while standing in a queue to buy urea has further fuelled the controversy between the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and the BJP over the shortage of urea.
On Thursday, 69-year-old Chervapuram Yellaiah was standing in the queue at the Dubbak Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society when he suddenly collapsed and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
The shortage of urea in the state is a subject of acrimony between the TRS and the BJP.
The TRS alleges that the Central government is responsible for the shortage. BJP leaders say the Centre has allotted more urea to Telangana state than it requires, but the state government has failed to distribute it to farmers in a properly planned manner.
In every district farmers are standing in long queues for urea for the last few days. In some places farmers came out onto the streets demanding the fertiliser.
TRS MLC and former chairman of the Telangana Rythu Samanwaya Samithi, Gutta Sukhendar Reddy, alleged that the Central government is responsible for the shortage of urea in Telangana. He said the problem will be solved within 10 days.
He said that Telangana BJP leaders instead of criticising the state government should try to get the Centre to allot more urea to the state.
Krishnasagar Rao, the BJP’s chief spokesperson in Telangana state, alleged that it was because of lack of proper planning in the distribution of urea that one farmer was dead in the home Assembly constituency of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
He said that the Central government sanctioned 8.5 lakh metric tonnes of urea for Telangana state when the state's requirement was 6.5 lakh metric tonnes.
“Though the Central government has sanctioned 2 lakh metric tonnes more, the KCR government has failed to distribute the urea to the farmers,” Mr Krishnasaagar Rao said.
Nizamabad BJP MP D. Arvind said the state government has failed to supply urea to farmers in the district.
He said that the state government has given ‘return gift’ in this way for the BJP defeating K. Kavitha, the daughter of the Chief Minister, who was the sitting MP from Nizamabad.
Elsewhere, Congress Legislature Party leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka condemned the state government’s attitude towards farmers.
Mr Vikramarka said that due to the failure of the state government in supplying urea, one farmer was dead in Dubbak.
