Hyderabad: BJP leader Karuna Gopal Vartakavi in collaboration with Impact Hub, a network of global entrepreneurs, organised a workshop ‘Eco Divas’ for women, to raise awareness about the eco-friendly diya for Diwali, here on Monday.

The workshop raised awareness about diyas made out of cow dung and soil and introduced the idea of circular economy to reduce waste, conserve resources and promote sustainable practices, and empower women through entrepreneurship.

Karuna Gopal who has represented India at the CoP21 — United Nations Climate Change Conference — said that ‘panchagavya,’ the comprising cow urine, dung and milk and derivatives like curd and ghee, have enormous environmental and health benefits.

The Gomaya Diyas are decorated using plant-based colours and are 100 per cent compostable. These lamps help save fertile land, she said. Artificial dyes are becoming a major water pollutant while the traditional terracotta lamps require baking that results in high levels of gaseous emissions.

Martin Stoehr, founder and managing director of Impact Hub Leipzig, joined the event online and stressed the exceptional initiative by the Impact Huband and the impact of sustainable practices on local communities.

Over 100 women of different age groups and girls participated in the workshop.
