Theni: Continuing his campaign for the AIADMK candidates as part of a whistle stop tour of Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister and party co-coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday urged the people to thwart attempts by 'betrayers' who were trying to "destroy" the AIADMK built by MGR and Jayalalithaa.

Without naming dissident T T V Dhinakaran, Mr. Palaniswami campaigning from an open van in places like Alanganallur gate and Usilampatti in the district for the AIADMK Theni Lok Sabha candidate, P Ravindranath Kumar, son of the Deputy Chief Minister, O. Pannerselvam, contesting from here, called upon the people to "defeat such conspirators" through this April 18 election to Parliament and for the Assembly bye-elections in the state.

"India is a huge democratic country and it needs a strong and resolute leadership who can ensure its security. The present Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the only capable person for ensuring its safety. Only when the country's borders are secure, can development take place," Palaniswami said, addressing the crowds.

Hitting out at the DMK as the party which did not fulfill its election promises in the past, Mr Palaniswami asked whether the scheme to distribute two acres of waste land to each landless family had been implanted by them.

Assuring to take steps to raise the water level in the Mullaiperiyar reservoir in the district up to the level of 152-ft in phases, as advised by the Supreme court, Mr. Palaniswami said a high level committee had also been appointed to suggest places where check dams could be constructed to augment local groundwater sources.

At Alanganallur in the constituency, as demanded by the people, the government would take steps to put up a commemorative statue celebrating the revival of 'jallikattu' sport on the efforts of the AIADMK government, he said, adding, a statue for late Forward Bloc leader Mookaiyah Thevar would also be erected at Usilampatti, another demand of the local people.
