THIRUVANANTHAPRUAM: The CPM state committee, which will meet on June 8 and 9, will deliberate among other things the issue regarding post to be given to veteran leader V.S. Achuthanandan. The meeting is taking place amid reports that Achuthanandan is not quite keen on taking up the posts being offered by the party and he is understood to have conveyed this the leadership.

He is yet to give his opinion on the proposal of Chairman, Administrative Reforms Commission with Cabinet rank, a post held by E.M.S. Namboodiripad and E.K. Nayanar in the past. Despite getting green light from the CPM politburo and state secretariat on granting a suitable position to Mr Achuthanandan, the last Cabinet could not take a decision on the issue.

The Cabinet felt the matter should be discussed in the LDF State committee as well. The CPM will have to consider various options including Cabinet post with independent charge so that he does not have to report to the chief minister. Besides, the leadership also wants to ensure that Mr Achuthanandan’s post does not lead to two power centres in the government.

Sources said CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury is likely to speak to the veteran leader to sort out the issue. The more it gets delayed, the tougher the situation will become to handle, they say.

The central leadership and the state leadership acknowledge the role played by the veteran in the huge victory of the LDF in the recent Assembly polls hence they want to offer him a befitting position. They are hopeful of sorting out the issue in consultation with Mr Achuthanandan at the earliest.
