Kerala Congress to organise campaign against UCC
CPM hoodwinking minorities in the name of UCC allege Congress
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala unit of Congress has decided to organise three big public meetings in the state to campaign against what it called the BJP's move to bring the Uniform Civil Code with a vested political motive.
PCC president K Sudhakaran alleged that the Centre was trying to create division among different communities and polarise the society for garnering votes in the coming elections. "We will expose the BJP's motive by creating awareness among the people," he said.
The party has named these public meetings as "Celebration of Diversity" and decided to mobilise people from all sections of society. Sudhakaran slammed the ruling CPM for its so-called concern for minorities. "They are trying to woo minorities like foxes promising to protect the chickens,” he said.
The Congress response came in the wake of CPM's decision to organise a statewide campaign against UCC by bringing all sections including Muslim religious groups on board. The ruling party had earlier slammed Congress for its vacillating stand on the issue.
Opposition leader VD Satheesan accused the CPM of having double standards in the uniform civil code and said that he has a question with the CPM and MV Govindan.
Have you changed your opinion of EMS? The CPM, which says that it will join hands with Samastha and the League, should first answer this, he said.
“I don't think you have anything else in this but political mileage," the opposition leader said.
The CPM accused the Congress of spreading misinformation regarding the stand taken by the party on the uniform civil code.
It is alleged that EMS welcomed the Uniform Civil Code and did not see it as a law to be implemented unilaterally. On the contrary, it is written in the Constitution that it is a matter to be implemented only when public opinion for social reform among the Scheduled Tribes and minority communities is formed.
