CHENNAI: Stepping in promptly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condemned desecration of statues in certain parts of the country, including in Tamil Nadu, even as the Union Home Ministry sent two advisories holding district collectors and superintendents of police "personally responsible" for such incidents of violence.

As reports came in from Tripura, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal that statues of Vladimir Lenin, Periyar and Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mukherjee respectively were vandalised or pulled down by miscreants, Modi dialed Home Minister Rajnath Singh and expressed his “strong disapproval of such incidents.”
