Telugu Desam in a fix over fighting civic polls
In the Lok Sabha elections, Congress contested alone and won three seats in the state.
Hyderabad: The Telugu Desam Party, which lost its hold in Telangana, is in a dilemma over contesting in the municipal elections.
Though they contemplated going in for an alliance with Congress and Left Parties, leaders from those parties are not very keen on the tie-up. Consequently, TDP leaders from Telangana are proposing to go it alone.
On Wednesday, the Telangana TDP leaders held a meeting at NTR Bhavan and took a decision temporarily, to contest at the places where the party has a hold.
The unexpected shock from Congress and Left has left them worried, Congress and TDP had contested in alliance during the Assembly elections in Telangana in 2018. Congress hoped that the TDP vote bank may assure victory but the strategy failed and Congress fare miserably.
In the Lok Sabha elections, Congress contested alone and won three seats in the state. In the Assembly elections, TDP contested in 13 constituencies and won only two seats in Khammam district and 3.5 percent of vote share. In the Lok Sabha elections, TDP did not even consider contesting for a single seat. In the recent Huzurnagar by-election, TDP contested the elections and lost again. TTDP president L Ramana said that party has been taking steps to contest in the municipal polls at places where they have a hold and appointed a state-level election committee to decide the strengths.
Meanwhile, the party appointed Parliament in-charges recently and they do not have assembly in-charges which may create difficulty in contesting the municipal elections.
The party itself is worried that the cadre left in Telangana is not keen on contesting in the municipal elections.
