Thiruvananthapuram: The state BJP is preparing an action plan to protect the environment in Munnar after finding that both the LDF and UDF governments had roles in the encroachments in Idukki district.

A fact-finding team led by Rajya Sabha MPs Suresh Gopi, Richard Hay and Rajeev Chandrasekhar will  visit  Munnar on Sunday. Later, a  central government delegation will go there.

This was announced by  BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan  after a  meeting with the MPs and Nemom MLA O. Rajagopal here on Monday.

Mr Kummanam told reporters  that some one lakh rooms had been constructed in Munnar over the last several years with the connivance of the authorities and politicians.

"The ordinary settlers should be provided land. There was no need for an all-party meeting on Sunday to evict the encroachers. The government should have acted against them and discussed  how to give land to the landless people,"  he said.

He alleged that the LDF government had failed to carry out  various central government schemes.

It had cheated the people as the statistics and utilisation certificates  on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act had not been submitted to the centre.  The central funds for Kuttanad and Idukki packages, Pamba river protection and Attapadi development schemes had lapsed, he added.

The centre will intervene to protect the traditional industries in the state. Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani will  visit Kerala to study the problems faced by the traditional handloom sector, he said.

Referring to Kerala Congress (M) chairman K. M. Mani’s entry into the NDA,  he said that the ball was in his court.  Talks will be initiated with him in due course, he added.
