New Delhi: On the eve of the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement the Congress Working Committee (CWC) met to pass a resolution commemorating the freedom struggle. The party launched an attack on the central government for erosion in the foundational values of the country.

The resolution of the Congress Working Committee said, “Taking note of and expressing its grave concern over the planned and systemic assaults on the foundational values of the country, and the constitutional rights of our citizens, the Indian National Congress, re-dedicates itself to uphold and defend the idea of India as envisioned by the leaders of the freedom movement.”

Speaking at the meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi hit out at the central government for not protecting the minorities, dalits, tribals and women. Gandhi said,  “Many sections live in fear, none more than the minorities, the Dalits, the tribals and women. Not a day passes without an incident where the liberty of the individual has been trampled upon by anti-social elements or self appointed vigilantes.”

She further accused the government of abetting and encouraging the attacks that take place. “Far from curbing their onslaught, the government of the day encourages and empowers them to flout the rule of law and unleash oppression,” Gandhi added. The Congress Working Committee also took note of the attack on Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and condemned it attributing the incident to forces of violence unleashed by the BJP.

The meeting further discussed the contribution of the Congress in the freedom struggle. It also urged upon the partymen to uphold the values for which the Congress fought the British.

The meeting was chaired by the Congress President  Sonia Gandhi. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi could not attend the meeting as he was down with viral fever.
