Hyderabad: MIM Assembly floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi declared on Wednesday that the TRS and MIM would together sweep the 2019 elections.

During a debate on minorities welfare, Mr Owaisi said TRS and MIM had swept the GHMC elections last year and this would be repeated in 2019.

He said the Congress had won a single seat out of 150 in the GHMC, to which Congress members shouted that they had won two.

His comments received thunderous applause from the treasury benches and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, too, cheered by thumping his desk, while the Congress objected strongly.

In his 80-minute speech, he denied the Congress any credit for statehood, and said it was forced to give it due to Mr Rao’s political strategy. He said the four per cent quota for Muslims was given by the late Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy and not the Congress.

“Congress claims that they gave quota for Muslims. If that was true, why could the Congress not provide Muslim quota in Karnataka, Maharashtra, where it was in power at that time? It was given by YSR and not Congress. This is because MIM was here and exerted pressure on the government. There was no MIM in the other states,” Mr Owaisi said.

He requested the CM to ensure that making Telugu compulsory till Class XII does not affect Muslim students and asked him to get feedback from parents and intellectuals before implementing this.

Mr Owaisi also urged the CM to conduct all entrance and recruitment exams in Urdu and ensure that Urdu be strictly implemented as the second official language of the state.
