Chennai: Leaders of the top opposition parties in the State continued their attack on the DMK government picking holes in the relief operations and putting the entire blame on it for the widespread damages caused by floods.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami accused the Chief Minister M K Stalin of being lethargic and causing the inundation of 20,000 to 30,000 roads in Chennai and many other localities from which people were unable to come out due to continuous water logging.

Speaking to media persons after distributing aid to people affected by the floods in Tiruvottiyur region on Saturday, he accused the government and ministers of misleading the people by stating that not a drop of water would stagnate in Chennai by making false claims on nearly completing the laying the storm water drainage system without doing anything about them.

After making a claim that 90 per cent of the work on storm water drainage was completed earlier, a minister was now saying only 51 per cent of the work was done, he said, alleging widespread corruption to the tune of Rs 4800 crore by the government.

State president of BJP, K Annamalai, issued a statement saying that all the announcements of increase in compensation for flood victims had been announced much earlier by the Union Government and that the Chief Minister was trying to pass them off as his own initiative.

He said that Rs 6000 announced by the State government should be increased to Rs 10,000  following the Union Government’s directive on disaster relief, which clearly gives a break-up of the amount to be paid to victims under various categories.
