Lucknow: The BJP has moved the Election Commission seeking action against BSP president Mayawati for allegedly violating the Supreme Court order against seeking votes in the name of caste.

The BJP has demanded that the BSP should be debarred form contesting elections. Neeraj Shankar Saxena, an executive member of the UP BJP, told reporters on Monday that he had filed a petition against the BSP.

“In her press conferences on December 24 and January 3, Ms Mayawati presented caste-wise details of ticket distribution clearly stating the number of tickets that her party has given tickets to Muslims, backwards, SCs and others. This is a clear attempt to seek votes in the name of caste,” he said.

The BJP leader further said that BSP workers were distributing booklets titled Muslim samaj ka sachcha hitaishi kaun — faisla aap karein  (Who is the real well-wisher of Muslims) in all the constituencies and this was also against the SC directives that votes cannot be sought on the basis of caste, community or language.
