Bengaluru: State BJP chief,  B.S.Yeddyurappa, who not too long ago breakfasted with Dalit families while on a tour of the state and even invited some of them to his home for a lunch afterwards, has clearly brushed off  the charges of “political gimmickry”  as he now intends to spend one night in a slum on Saturday to see for himself the conditions its people live in.

Mr. Yeddyurappa’s chosen slum is  Laxmanpuri near Gandhinagara Assembly segment. During his night there, he hopes to chat with slumdwellers and learn of their problems. And on Sunday he will release a report by a BJP team on slums across the state while still at the Laxmanpuri slum.

But this time following in their leader’s footsteps will be BJP leaders, K.S.Eshwarappa, Jagadish Shettar, Shobha Karandlaje, Govinda Karjola, Tippareddy, Papareddy, Tipparaju, Bharathi Shetty and Sampangi, who too will stay in slums Saturday to get a first hand feel of the poverty that stalks its dwellers.

Revealing this here on Friday,  , BJP MP of Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha constituency, P.C. Mohan said the party’s intention was to not only to study the conditions of slums, but to also ensure that they were provided the basic amenities they lacked.

“Nearly 88 percent of slums have no public toilets. And the few slums that do have them , have no water connections. Over 28 per cent slums have no streetlights, and a few slums have no roads. The party team, which studied the problems of over 2000 slums in the state, has prepared a report, on their conditions and promised to improve their amenities, “ said party general secretary, Ravikumar.
