Chennai: BJP calls for action against farmers' chief Ayyakannu

Chennai: The unseemly episode of a woman BJP functionary slapping agriculture leader Ayyakannu on Thursday is getting murkier with the state BJP president Dr Tamilisai Sounderarajan demanding ‘stern action’ against the firebrand farmer for using filthy language to abuse her party colleague.
“It is a horrible insult to all the women, that too on the International Women’s Day”, she said agitatedly,
Septuagenarian Ayyakannu had gone to the famous Tiruchendur Murugan temple for distributing pamphlets demanding that the Centre set up the Cauvery Management Board and ban GM seeds. He reportedly commented that he had come to pray to God to give Modi the good sense to use his intelligence to do good for the farmers. This obviously irked some BJP members present there and one of them, the Toothukudi BJP women’s wing secretary K. Nellaiammal, 43, told the farmers’ leader that the holy temple precincts should not be misused for his propaganda.
“When I raised my genuine concern, he called me by a dirty name (unprintable). I just could not control my hurt and anger, so I slapped him. How could he call me that? Any woman would have lost her temper”, Nellaiammal told DC.
However, Ayyakannu denied he uttered the foul word and claimed that someone accompanying him “might have said that, not me”. He said he was stunned by the BJP woman’s “sudden violence”. He said he counseled his enraged followers to remain calm and withdrew from the place.
“He is lying. He did utter that dirty word and it is there even on the video. We want stern action to be taken; otherwise, the consequences will be serious”, said Tamilisai.
