HYDERABAD:  Telangana Congress on Wednesday demanded that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao announce allotment of ration cards to all eligible new applicants too.

AICC member G. Niranjan said Congress welcomes the state cabinet decision of granting ration cards to all eligible applicants numbering 4.4 lakh. However, the state government should also provide an opportunity for filing fresh applications, as thousands of poor households are not having ration cards. They are forced to purchase their essential commodities from the open market.

The Congress leader pointed out that names of many household members had earlier been deleted from ration cards by officials irrationally. He requested the government to instruct authorities concerned to include these deleted names too in the ration cards.

Niranjan said ration cards should be given on priority to people who are below the poverty line. In future, if situations like the pandemic recur, ration cards will have to be given to other sections too, as people have no resources to make a living.
