Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Monday met President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi for the first time after swearing-in as the constitutional head of the state.
Purohit, who arrived in New Delhi on a 6-day visit on Sunday evening, met Kovind and Naidu, in what was described by the Raj Bhawan in Chennai as "courtesy call." aThough sources said politics was not discussed, it is understood the political situation in Tamil Nadu would have come up for discussion during the meeting.
Purohit will be in New Delhi till Friday during which he will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attend the Governors' Conference to be chaired by Kovind on Thursday and Friday.
Purohit will also meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and is likely to brief him about the political situation in the state, where the ruling party is battling a rebellion by rebel T T V Dhinakaran. 18 MLAs owing allegiance to Dhinakaran have been disqualified from their positions by the Speaker, which has been challenged in the Madras High Court. The High Court has also imposed a stay on conduct of floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. He is also likely to broach the topic during his meeting with Kovind and Modi.
