THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bindu Krishna, 44, the talented, firebrand woman leader, who has taken over the reins of the Kollam DCC, has vowed to make a difference to the fortunes of the party in the district. This is for the second time in the history of the Congress that a woman is heading the Kollam DCC after Saraswathi Kunjukrishnan. Bindu Krishna on Friday visited all the former Kollam DCC presidents, including Saraswathi Kunjukrishnan, C.V. Padmarajan, Kadavoor Sivadasan, C. Prathapavarma Thampan, N. Azhakan, K. C. Rajan and V. Sathyasheelan. She told DC that she got the blessings of both KPCC president V. M. Sudheeran and Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala.
However, even with their blessings, she was denied a seat in the Assembly elections in May. “I have a challenging task ahead and am confident of leading the party to great heights in the district where it has fared badly,” she told DC. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Attingal, she was defeated by CPM's A. Sampath by nearly 70, 000 votes. But the biggest shock was when she was defeated by CPI's G. S. Jayalal by over 12, 000 votes from Chathannur Assembly seat in 2011, which came under her home district.
Bindu Krishna nurses a grouse that she was never given a sure seat by the KPCC. She joined the KSU at the age of 15 and steadily climbed the leadership ladder by first becoming the unit secretary at SN College for Women, Kollam. She was made the Mahila Congress state president in 2011. Mr Rahul Gandhi appointed her as the national vice-president of Youth Congress after a talent hunt.
