Hyderabad: The BRS on Friday took aim at the distribution of Sri Rama Akshintalu by the VHP and other religious organisations, calling it a political ploy by the BJP to garner votes in the Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a meeting of party leaders from Bhongir Lok Sabha constituency, BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao said, “The BJP is using religion for politics. Had we distributed Yadadri Akshintalu in Nalgonda and Bhongir, maybe we too could have won (the Assembly seats),” he said.

“Those in the BJP are political Hindus, while KCR views religion for what it is, he is that kind of Hindu. Only the BRS is a truly secular party,” Rama Rao said.

He also said, “The claims by the Congress that the BRS and the BJP are together are as ridiculous as finding links between the Shankaracharyas and ‘Peerla Panduga (Moharram)’.”

Rama Rao took full responsibility for not focusing on the party and concentrating on the administration while in power. Listing his other failures, Rama Rao said he had not attended to organisational matters as much as he should have done, had not been able to provide appropriate positions to those who had joined the BRS from other parties, as well as not paying attention to the financial situation of party workers.

He also cautioned BRS leaders against saying that people made a mistake by not voting for the party. “The same people had elected the BRS twice. The reality is that the BRS was not rejected by the people as we lost in 14 places by narrow margins,” he said.

The party also announced that its ongoing LS constituency meetings will resume on January 17 after the Sankranti holidays.
