Cops represent traffic mgmt, crime prevention too: Kiran Bedi
Senior officers must be on location every morning to spot strategise, plan and oversee smooth flow of traffic.
Puducherry: Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi said that traffic management and crime prevention together represent Puducherry Police and one is not separate from the other.
“No violation of the law can take place under the nose of a police officer, whether traffic or other just because it pertains to a section of the law that is not your area of duty,” she said. Ms Bedi was attending a review meeting with the traffic police officials at the police training academy here.
Traffic police officers should be trained a little bit on English and Hindi as well to meet tourist needs. Regulation of traffic must be a priority during peak hours. “If there is a violation, don’t stop the flow by stopping the violator. Instead, take a photo or video and send a challan. Let the courts prosecute,” she told themThe Lt Governor urged the officials to use their mobiles to record violations till they get funds to deploy cameras at signals,
“Deploy your official videographer in uniform, every day at 8 am on different signals by turn to record violations. This will instil effective fear of prosecution among violators,” she said.
Senior officers must be on location every morning to spot strategise, plan and oversee smooth flow of traffic. She asked officials to maintain traffic barriers and said that deployment of manpower should be based on the need of the area and well thought out.
To recognise the work of traffic police officials the Lt Governor said that every month four officers and four traffic beat officers must be recognised and rewarded.
