HYDERABAD: The BRS said that only the party-run Telangana government was providing 50 per cent reservations in local bodies for women, as the party beat back the BJP’s questions on its commitment to the women’s cause

Ministers Sabitha Indra Reddy and Satyavathi Rathod told reporters in New Delhi, defending BRS MLC K. Kavitha’s protest in the Capital for 33 per cent reservation for women, said the TS government was implementing several welfare programmes for women.

They said the state had 59,000 women as ward members in municipalities, 6,844 sarpanchs and more than 4,000 women representatives in mandals and zilla parishads.

Sabitha Indra Reddy said Kavitha’s dharna was for all the women in the country, adding that “we will rally with her and demonstrate the power of women.”

Satyavathi Rathod said BRS was committed to women’s welfare, safety and security. The SHE Teams of the Telangana police had become models for other states. It was the Chief Minister who gave the opportunity to a woman to be the mayor and deputy mayor.
