M Karunanidhi seeks Tasmac shop closure
Police had attacked a family in public in Tiruvannamalai and a pregnant woman and her husband had been assaulted by police in Triplicane.
Chennai: DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday asked why the state government is refusing to close the Tasmac shop in Foreshore Estate, despite continuous protests by people.
Recalling the death of a school teacher Nandini when she chased a robber who snatched her hand bag, the DMK leader said people had been protesting for the shop's closure for about a week, he said. The state government should respect people's voice and announce that the shop will be closed, he said and added that the government should accept the responsibility if anything untoward occurred during the protests. He also cited a report in a Tamil bi-weekly that police in Nagercoil tortured a poor family including women and children for 63 days asking them to confess a theft of jewellery.
Police had attacked a family in public in Tiruvannamalai and a pregnant woman and her husband had been assaulted by police in Triplicane. The incidents had lowered the credibility of police, he said and asked the state police to conduct themselves with humanity and caution.
