Basavaraj Horatti beats his own record by winning Karnataka Legislative Council
When starting out three-and-a-half decades ago, he was the youngest member of the Council.
Hubballi: JD(S) leader Basavaraj Horatti has set a record by winning a seventh consecutive term in the state Legislative Council.
He could now perhaps be the seniormost member of a state’s Upper House in the country as he has won from the same constituency since 1980.
When starting out three-and-a-half decades ago, he was the youngest member of the Council.
With his tireless work for the welfare of teachers over the years clearly paying off, around 18 teachers’ associations in the constituency openly expressed their support for him.
But Mr Horatti was also helped by the rebel factor in the BJP and the decision of the Congress to change its candidate at the very last moment.
The low voting percentage, especially in Dharwad district, where a large number of teachers are loyal to the Bharatiya Janata Party, paved the way as well for his win by a huge margin.
