Chennai: President Pranab Mukherjee offered prayers at the ancient Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple at Kancheepuram near here on Tuesday evening during his brief visit to the Silk city.

The President who arrived by a special flight at the naval base INS Rajali in Arakkonam, drove straight to Kancheepuram, which is also famous for numerous temples. Mr Pranab, clad in dhoti and angavastram,  arrived at the Sri Kamakshi Amman temple at 2.25 pm to full temple honours and offered his prayers. He was later taken around the temple in a battery-operated car.

He then proceeded to the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, which is located close by, at 4 pm and was received cordially by the Kanchi Acharya Sri Jayendra Saraswati and the junior Acharya Sri Vijayendra Saraswati. Mr Pranab performed guru puja on the occasion. He was closeted with the Acharyas for sometime before leaving to the national capital via Arakkonam.
