Chennai: Former AIADMK legislator and also former secretary of Anna Thozhirsanga Peravai, the trade union wing of the ruling AIADMK, R. Chinnasamy, was expelled from the party on Monday for acting in a manner that brought disrepute to the AIADMK.

He was expelled from the primary membership of the party as well, informed AIADMK convenor and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and joint convenor and Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, in a joint statement here.

Chinnasamy, who hails from Coimbatore, was also stripped of all party posts, they said and appealed to AIADMK workers not to have any truck with him. The release did not mention any reason for his expulsion.

The disciplinary action comes close on the heels of his arrest on Sunday by the Central Crime Branch officials, from his residence in Coimbatore on charges of misappropriation of funds of the party's Anna Thozhirsanga Peravai. The case was registered following a complaint of misappropriation of funds of the Anna Thozhirsanga Peravai to the tune of '8 crore when he was its secretary from 2009 to 2018.

Chinnasamy represented the Singanallur Assembly constituency for two consecutive terms (2006-2011, 2011-2016) and was appointed the secretary of the trade union in 2009 by the party's then general secretary J. Jayalalithaa.

The AIADMK leadership had on February 2 removed Chinnasamy from the post of secretary of the Anna Trade Union. His removal was viewed as a fallout of the strike by transport unions that had crippled the bus services in Tamil Nadu for over a week in that month. Following this, Chinnasamy filed a suit challenging his removal as secretary from the party's trade union wing.
