Bhubaneswar: Waking up after months of silence, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday resurrected its war machinery against Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) by holding a grand demonstration in front of the newly built Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), accusing the latter of mismanagement and large-scale corruption.

The party also held similar demonstrations in many other offices of many other urban local bodies across the state.

In Bhubaneswar, the BJP workers squatted on one side of the Janapath Road in front of the BMC office, blocking vehicular traffic between Mastercateen Square and Vani Vihar.

The degree of anger of the BJP workers got well-manifested as they dumped truckloads of garbage in front of the BMC office to register their protest against alleged corruption in solid waste management.

Dillip Mohanty, the state BJP spokesperson, justified the dumping of the garbage in front of the BMC office.

“Earlier, the BMC had taught us to dump garbage in front of the houses of the citizens who do not keep their surroundings clean and pile waste in their neighbourhood.  Since the BMC fails to keep the city clean and falters in solid waste management, we dumped garbage in front of its office,” said BJP spokesperson,” Mohanty.

The BJP leader accused the state government officials of pocketing crores of rupees given by the Narendra Modi government under the Smart City project.

“Bhubaneswar city has now in fact turned into a dumping yard with garbage stinks filling the air, making life for the denizens unbearable.

Even during the dengue, when the BMC failed to curb the mosquito menace, the present BMC authorities threatened the residents of Bhubaneswar to collect fines from them,” he added.

There was, however, no reaction from the ruling BJD.
