Kerala Assembly Elections: Rain clouds over poll day
A good drop in temperatures seems to have done the trick
KOCHI: Weathermen have pointed to the possibility of rains marring the elections on Monday due to change in weather conditions in recent days. According to Dr Manoj M.G., research scientist with the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research (ACARR) of Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) in recent days, a trough (extended low pressure region) is now lying over south-west Bay of Bengal.
“This may intensify into a depression (i.e., very intense low pressure) in the next 48 hours, and this system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rain (ranging from 3 to 5 cm of rainfall) at isolated places over Kerala (especially over south and central districts of Kerala) during May 15, 16 and 17,” Dr Manoj said.
Already parts of Pathanamthitta and eastern parts of Ernakulam are witnessing summer showers. Any change in weather pattern leading to heavy rains can affect polling percentage with mainly women and elderly desisting from voting.
