Hyderabad: The Congress is on it toes trying to catch the Election Commission on the wrong foot. Along with caretaker Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, Congress leaders seem to be looking upon Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Sharma as their opponent.

The state Congress’ Election Commission coordination committee on Sunday found fault with Mr Sharma for not intimating anyone of the opening of the warehouse where the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are stored.

Speaking to mediapersons at Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday, committee chairman Marri Shashidhar Reddy said, “The CEO has said that there is a technical error in the EVMs. He said that about 25,000 votes had gone missing by pressing a wrong button. He said that the issue would be resolved in a week. We challenge that the 25 lakh votes will go missing. Where was the need to open the warehouse without informing anyone? We are already suspecting the functioning of the EVMs.”

Mr Reddy added, “There is a need to open the EVM seal in front of the nodal officer and a video should be recorded until it was sealed again. The Election Commission is making many errors. There is a need to postpone the elections. We are very clear that the EC is not working properly, it is awash with errors. They (the EC) have gone for prestige and announced the date of elections in a hurry.”
