Belagavi: The BJP government at the Centre is looting people by initiating several projects which have turned a burden on the common man, claimed AICC general secretary and state party incharge, K.C. Venugopal.

Describing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) imposed by the Centre as a fresh burden on people, he accused the NDA government of protecting the interests of the rich at the cost of the poor.

Inaugurating the ‘Mane Manege Congress’ campaign at Dharmanath Bhavan in Belagavi on Sunday, Mr Venugopal accused the BJP of engaging in politics in the name of religion and said people from all classes were together when the Congress was involved in the freedom movement.

Being a Hindu and hating others was unfair, he said adding that he had never hated anyone else though he was a Hindu.

He lauded the work taken up by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah highlighting projects like Anna Bhagya, Ksheera Bhagya and Indira Canteens and said they had been launched for people's welfare.

Later, responding to a question on the failure to make a breakthrough in the Gauri Lankesh murder case, he said the Special Investigation Team constituted by the  government had already obtained vital clues. The police was investigating the case seriously and the process would reach a logical end, he said

Party leaders discussed Congress programmes being implemented in the district, he said adding that though there were some differences among leaders in Belagavi, the party would take steps to overcome them. Mr Venugopal visited several villages in Saudatti and Bailhongal taluks in Belagavi as part of the Mane Manege programme and met people.

When the Congress programme was being held inside Dharmanath Bhavan, a group of BJP leaders staged a protest outside the venue against the recent abusive language used by Minister Roshan Baig against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The police intervened and arrested the activists.
