Congress appeals to KCR to extend relief to residents in flood-hit areas in Hyderabad
About 5,000 people in about 1000 houses in the three colonies were living in miserable conditions
Hyderabad: State Congress chief N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday urged Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao to extend immediate relief to the residents of Osmannagar, Saifnagar, Abdullah Yahya Nagar and other localities which are still submerged in floodwaters following the rains in the second week of October.
In an open letter to the Chief Minister, the TPCC chief said: “The people of Hyderabad are living in the most miserable conditions in the last two months but the government does not care.” About 5,000 people in about 1000 houses in the three colonies were living in miserable conditions, he said.
The residents, belonging to the poor and middle classes, had lost their electronic gadgets, children's books and furniture. He said the people were “experiencing hell,” surrounded by water and living amid nauseating odour, mosquitoes and snakes. The face the risk of contrating water borne diseases as well as those spread by mosquitoes.
“No official or public representative has come forward to support the people there,” said the TPCC chief who had toured the area on Friday. “Proof of your governance is the fact that the situation is so bad in a ministerial constituency that is not so far away from Hyderabad,” he told the Chief Minister.
The residents had no access to safe drinking water. Three-phase power supply is required to pump away the water and drains have to be cleared, the TPCC chief said.
He said lack of coordination between the municipality, irrigation, revenue and electricity departments had made things difficult. The TPCC chief said when he enquired about the situation in Osmannagar with the collector and other officials, he was told that they had submitted a report to the state government and were a waiting funds.
Uttam Kumar Reddy asked the Chief Minister to order enumeration of damage in the area and pay compensation to each family. Steps should be taken to find a permanent solution to inundation of those areas in the future.
