Chennai: When the People’s Welfare Alliance was formed, there were speculations that it would split before the Assembly elections. Whenever one of the leaders skipped any function of the alliance due to personal reasons, there used to be rumours of difference of opinion among them. To avoid this the leaders decided to stick together from the morning walk to evening functions.

They used to take lunch together and it used to be a combination of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes as two of the leaders of vegetarian. Despite leading the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, (party of panthers) Thol Thirumavalavan is a vegetarian and CPM state secretary G. Ramakrishnan avoids non-vegetarian food during journeys.

But, MDMK leader Vaiko and CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan used to take non-vegetarian. Aware of Thirumavalavan’s food habit, Vaiko used to order vegetarian food to his VCK and CPM allies, while giving orders for mutton, fish and chicken food to himself and Mutharasan.

If the media had known about it, they would have written a story speculating strong differences in PWA, one of the MDMK functionaries said in a lighter vein.
