BJP slams pulling down of Tamil banners in Bengaluru
The incident in the neighbouring state comes close on the heels of stiff opposition to the use of Hindi in signage in Bengaluru metro stations.
Chennai: The state unit of the BJP condemned the violent incidents leading to the damage of the Tamil banners in various parts of Bengaluru by members of a pro-Kannada outfit.
Shortly after Tamil news channels claimed that Tamil banners in various parts of Bengaluru were damaged by members of a pro-Kannada outfit, BJP state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan said, “If this is true, it is condemnable because, Tamils have been living in Karnataka for centuries and it is like their native place. There is nothing wrong in erecting banners in one’s mother tongue.”
Asked what steps the Centre would take on the issue, she replied, “these things come under the purview of the state government. Why do you expect the Centre to interfere in all issues?”
The incident in the neighbouring state comes close on the heels of stiff opposition to the use of Hindi in signage in Bengaluru metro stations.
Tamizhar Vazhvurimai Katchi president Velmurugan said, “I can understand Kannada organisations protesting against the imposition of Hindi. But Tamils are part of Bengaluru’s culture and what is wrong in keeping banners for Aadi Kiruthigai. Tearing of banners in Tamil is strongly condemnable.”
Meanwhile, the BJP party members are eagerly looking forward to the visit of party’s national president Amit Shah who is expected to deliver a pep talk during his interaction with the party workers.
The party has planned to organise a meeting of its fishermen wing representatives with Mr. Shah when he visits the city on August 23. He is expected to address booth committee members.
