Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress leaders on Wednesday flayed the Modi government for its communal agenda and called for a second freedom struggle to free the country from communal politics and protect democracy.

They were speaking at the conclusion of the fast undertaken by KPCC president M.M. Hassan against the atrocities against dalits, minorities and backward classes  at Indira Bhavan on Wednesday. He had begun the fast at 11 a.m. on Tuesday which was inaugurated by Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala. Former chief minister Oommen Chandy, who  marked its end,  alleged that the Modi government  was 'dividing India’ although he had proclaimed the slogan ‘Make in India.’

Mr Hassan attacked the BJP’s cow politics which had  so far killed 30 people. He said the time had  come for a second freedom struggle to free the country from the wrong policies of the BJP government.

Mr Chandy  said if earlier the people celebrated the Independence Day with pride, now they were  doing it with apprehension.

“Until recently the people lived in harmony amid cultural diversity during the Congress governance. But now the situation is alarming and the people are living with trepidation. We have to fight the government through Gandhian principles, ” he said.

Mr P. K. Kunhalikutty, MP,  who also spoke said that the BJP was  shying away from the real issues facing the country.
