Hyderabad: The ground is set for TRS senior MLA Pocharam Srinivas Reddy to be elected Speaker of the newly-elected Telangana Assembly.

The Congress Legislature Party had taken a decision not to contest the Speaker’s election, during their meeting in the morning.

The name of Mr Srinivas Reddy was doing the rounds even before the Chief Minister finalised his name. Mr Srinivas Reddy was seen accompanying Mr Chandrasekhar Rao in his car as they headed to pay tributes at the Telangana Martyrs’ memorial in front of the Assembly building before the first session began, triggering further speculation.

He was first elected as a legislator in 1994 on a TD ticket from Banswada constituency. He was made minister for housing in 1998. He retained the same seat in the 1999 and was minister for mines and geology. He also served as panchayat raj minister in 2000.

In 2011, at the peak of the Telangana agitation for separate statehood, he quit as MLA and joined the TRS. He was re-elected in the by-election held the same year. In 2014, when the TRS came to power after the bifurcation, he was made the agriculture minister.
