WARANGAL: Kisan Congress has accused the state government of being negligent in sanctioning compensation to farmers who have suffered losses during the recent heavy rains.

Speaking to media at the Congress Bhavan in Hanamkonda on Wednesday, Kisan Congress chairman S. Anvesh Reddy said the state government has not yet assessed the crop loss, so that compensation could be sanctioned to farmers.

He maintained that instead of inspecting crop loss through officials of agriculture department, authorities are conducting meetings of farmers with officials of police department, whose job is to look after law and order, he said.

Anvesh Reddy said instead of procuring the targeted 80 lakh quintals of food grains, government has purchased only 20 lakh quintals till date, thereby benefitting middlemen.

The Kisan Congress chairman said once food grains are sent to rice mills after weighing them at procurement centres, millers should not deduct any weight in the name of wastage. He charged that innocent farmers are being cheated with officials at procurement centres deducting five kg of weight and millers deducting another four to five kg in the name of wastage.

Anvesh Reddy demanded that the government must purchase food grains without any restrictions and deducting weight in the name of wastage. The sheet listing the weight of goods procured must be handed over to farmers to prevent looting by officials and rice millers, he underlined.
