Kiran Bedi visits Pims to inspect water management systems
The Lt Governor said that the state ground water authority will draw out a detailed inspection of bore wells.
Puducherry: Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi, on a mission to make the UT water rich, visited Pondicherry Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) and water harvesting industrial unit Chemfab Alkalis situated on Kalapet area here to inspect the water usage and water management systems.
The Lt Governor who emphasised on the importance of giving top priority to water harvesting in Puducherry, was visiting various institutions in the Union Territory to spread the awareness on the same.
Bedi along with other officials reached the institutions early in the morning and held discussions on improvements in water management systems for the future.
The team noted that Chemfab Alkalis had put in place robust rain water harvesting wells to capture run-off water and PIMS has agreed to provide water harvesting facility to capture run-off water in their premises.
The people of the area are now facing the challenge of ground water depletion coupled with sea water intrusion, the Lt Governor said that the state ground water authority will draw out a detailed inspection of bore wells.
"Experts from National Remote Sensing Agency and Central Ground Water Board are to be actively engaged with our ongoing efforts. The World Bank funded National Hydrology Project to be used for profiling the ground water," she said.
Ms Bedi asked PWD officers to work in coordination with the Pondicherry University and Pondicherry Engineering College that are situated in the vicinity for putting in place water harvesting structures. “The spatial abundance of these institutions would provide for maximum rain water harvesting and consequently strengthen the ground water table of Kalpet area and prevent intrusion of sea water,” said an official release.
