Lucknow: Former Chief Minister of UP and Uttarakhand and veteran Congress leader N.D. Tiwari and his son Rohit Shekar Tiwari have joined the BJP.

Mr Tiwari, who joined the BJP on Wednesday, ostensibly to secure a ticket for son Rohit Shekhar Tiwari from Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, has left his old associates in the Congress ‘shocked’.

“His joining the BJP is shocking for us and though he may say anything we know that his heart must be bleeding to move out of the Congress. He has done this to ensure a political career for his son,” said an old acquaintance of Mr Tiwari.

Mr Tiwari was thrice the CM of Uttar Pradesh and later of Uttarakhand. He also served as a minister at the Centre several times and held several key portfolios. His political career came to an end when he was embroiled in a sex tape controversy when he was Governor of Andhra Pradesh.

Mr Tiwari — after he was forced to accept his biological son Rohit Shekhar following a court drama — had been trying to chart a political career for him.
