New faces, more women in civic bodies: AIADMK
The move comes in the wake of AIADMK govt in 2015 moving a bill in the Assembly, notifying 50 per cent reservation for women in all local bodies.
Chennai: Ruling AIADMK is all set to field new faces with a clean image in the ensuing civic polls. Party district secretaries have started identifying more women functionaries to be fielded for local body polls. The move comes in the wake of AIADMK government in 2015 moving a bill in the Assembly, notifying 50 per cent reservation for women in all local bodies.
“With the party executive committee adopting a resolution on Saturday thanking the party leader for moving the 50 per cent reservation, the message is clear that the party now needs more women candidates”, said an AIADMK functionary who attended the party executive meeting. Now it is for the party seniors to look out for women candidates to be fielded in the local body polls, The party women’s wing is all excited as most of them feel that the wing now has more political opportunities through the ensuing polls.
“Jayalalithaa has always been a champion when it comes to women empowerment and promoting women in politics. Even prior to the 2015 reservation bill, the party leadership in 2011 civic polls fielded six women as mayoral candidates of the total 10 mayor seats,” said AIADMK spokesperson C, R. Saraswathi.
