M Karunanidhi exempted from Assembly attendance
The resolution will enable the 94-year-old veteran leader to remain as an MLA despite his inability to attend the House.
Chennai: A resolution introduced by DMK working president M.K. Stalin to exempt party chief M. Karunanidhi from attending the Assembly was passed with no party including the ruling AIADMK (Amma) not opposing it.
Stalin who brought the resolution said former Chief Minister and legislator M. Karunanidhi is undergoing treatment for illness. Doctors had advised him sufficient rest, he added.
The leader of Opposition said he is bringing a resolution under Assembly rule 20 (1) to exempt Karunanidhi from attending the session which began from 14 July this year. The resolution was seconded by DMK floor deputy leader K. Duraimurugan. The resolution was put to voice test by Speaker P. Dhanapal and it was passed in voice vote with no one opposing it.
Karunanidhi, who is ill for about seven months, was unable to vote in the Presidential elections. A member could be disqualified from the Assembly if he did not take part in Assembly proceedings or did not sign the Assembly register for more than six months.
