Kataram(Bhupalapalli): Among the large crowds that thronged Kataram on Thursday to catch a glimpse of the Congress’ Vijayabheri bus yatra were thousands of women, who sought to share their problems with Rahul Gandhi.

He touched on their problems, to loud cheers, which got even louder as he talked about his grandmother Indira Gandhi, and likened his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to her.

Hardly a moment after Congress MLA D. Sridhar Babu translated Gandhi’s speech into Telugu — “Women must take responsibility to change the government and they can be a role model to others” —the crowd erupted in loud cheers, showering Rahul Gandhi with petals.

The women also gave Rahul Gandhi’s convoy a guard of honour by standing on both sides of the road and showering flowers on the Congress leader’s vehicle.

B. Rama, of Manthani, said she came to see Rahul Gandhi as he was the grandson of the late Indira Gandhi, who, she recollected, visited Manthani in the 1980s in a helicopter. She said there was only one party for her, the Congress, saying others like TD and BJP came later.

Kattmma, of Suraiahpalli village in Manthani Mandal, said Rahul Gandhi was among her favourite leaders, as he talked about inflation and price rise, the pinch of which women feel the hardest. She said they may get relief if the Congress comes to power, as its six guarantees include the provision of LPG cylinders for Rs500 and Rs2,500 financial assistance to women.
