Congress Faces Challenges in Karnataka Ahead of Parliamentary Election
Ministers have been given the task to identify three candidates from the district assigned to them
Mangaluru: The upcoming parliamentary election poses a tough challenge for the Congress party, despite its historic triumph in the recent Karnataka assembly election.
Buoyed by successes in Karnataka and Telangana, Congress leaders aspire to secure over 20 seats in Karnataka (out of 28), a significant leap from their current standing at 1 seat. However, as the party grapples with internal and external dynamics, party workers acknowledge the imperative for leaders to address critical issues.
With the Congress holding sway in the state, the competition for party tickets for the parliamentary election has intensified, spurred by a surge in aspirants following the assembly election. Consequently, each constituency now witnesses a higher number of contenders. Ministers have been given the task to identify three candidates from the district assigned to them.
Amidst the speculations surrounding potential candidates in each constituency, the challenge for the party lies in identifying individuals with both winning capabilities and familiarity among party workers.
A senior party member emphasizes, "In several constituencies, BJP and their MPs are very strong. Congress needs an equally formidable candidate to defeat them. To secure more seats this time, the party must prioritize candidates based on their electability rather than any other considerations."
Additionally, the party faces the crucial task of overhauling its structure at every level, particularly in districts where its presence is notably weak.
Recognizing the pivotal role of the party in parliamentary elections, KPCC vice president PV Mohan emphasizes the necessity to fortify the organization at all levels.
"Party strength plays a crucial role in parliamentary elections. Therefore, there is a need to fortify the party in areas where the organization is currently weak. Motivating and empowering party workers, ensuring their active engagement for the next six months, becomes imperative in effectively conveying government programs and the party's achievements to the people," he told Deccan Chronicle.
