Tamil Nadu Polls: PWA alliance decimated

Chennai: The much hyped DMDK-People’s Welfare Alliance-TMC Alliance also known as third front has failed to win even a single seat and together polled a dismal 5.3 per cent of total votes.
The six party alliance comprising DMDK, MDMK, TMC, VCK, CPI (M) and CPI contested the state polls projecting DMDK chief Vijayakanth as its chief ministerial candidate and also promised to form a coalition government if voted to power.
Mr Vijayakanth who contested from Ulundurpettai lost his deposit by ending distant third with 34,447 votes, while VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan, who contested from his party stronghold Kattumannarkoil seat, lost by a slender margin of mere 87 votes.
CPI’s Thalli candidate T. Ramachandran polled the highest number of votes of 68,184 among all the alliance’s candidates. The highest number of votes polled by any of alliance party is by Vijayakanth’s DMDK, which emerged as a much sought after party in run up to the assembly polls due to its decisive prove vote bank of 8 per cent to 4 per cent, rejected the alliance offer of DMK and BJP to join hands with PWA.
After a failed attempt to join AIADMK alliance, TMC decided to align with DMDK-PWA alliance gave credence to the expectation of an emergence of a stronger “third” alternative to AIADMK and DMK.
The third front seeks to end the bipolar politics of TN with a promise of coalition government. The third front’s promise of alternative to Dravidian majors seems to failed to attract voters.
The alliance parties had polled lesser votes compared to what they polled in earlier elections. The alliance coordinator and MDMK chief Vaiko and CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan said that both the AIADMK and DMK had won the election on basis of money power not entirely through democratic means.
