Chennai: Bypoll to four constituencies register over 77 per cent voter turnout
Overall polling has been peaceful, free and fair.
CHENNAI: Polling has been peaceful in the four Assembly constituencies and also the re-polling at 13 polling stations in the State on Sunday. The by-poll at the Assembly constituencies of Aravakurichi, Sulur, Thirupparankundram and Ottapidaram registered an average voters' turnout of 77.62 per cent.
Though initially there were some technical glitches, polling turned out brisk later in the day and thereafter it gained momentum. The Aravakurichi Assembly constituency polled the maximum of 84.28 per cent followed by Sulur with 79.41, Thirupparankundram: 74.17 and Ottapidaram: 72.61 per cent. “Overall polling has been peaceful, free and fair. There were no untoward incidents as both the major stakeholders - the political parties and the voters, cooperated with the Election Commission,” says Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo. The results will be announced on May 23.
AIADMK coordinator and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam exuded confidence that the AIADMK-combine would trounce the DMK in the Lok Sabha elections and Assembly by-poll. “Our candidates and allies, too, will win the election by a hefty margin,” he said.
