HYDERABAD: Charging Prime Minister Narendra Modi with causing hundreds of deaths in the aftermath of demonetisation in 2016, TPCC working president Mahesh Kumar Goud wondered, “Why are Rs 2000 notes banned now? What benefits did we get by the earlier demonetisation exercise? You will pay a heavy price for causing economic turmoil.”

Senior Congress leader Shabbir Ali, in a separate media statement on Saturday, accused the BJP government of attempting to cover up the failures of the previous demonetisation by withdrawing the Rs 2000 notes.

Recalling the distress caused by the 2016 demonetisation drive, Shabbir Ali mentioned that over 100 people reportedly lost their lives and around 15 lakh jobs were lost, as estimated by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). He expressed concerns that the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes could lead to a similar chaos.
