Kochi: Congress and CPM leaders accused each other for instigating violence at Udayamperoor where an uneasy calm prevailed on Saturday amidst a protest meeting by Congress workers. Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the protest meeting.

In his address, Oommen Chandy said that Congress workers should react democratically to the violence unleashed by CPM workers. He also said that to end the SFI violence against police and the attack against Congress office at Udayamperoor, consistent agitation was needed. Former minister K Babu and DCC general secretary Raju P Nair also addressed the gathering.

Meanwhile CPM Ernakulam district secretary P Rajeev in a statement said that the violence in Udayamperoor was the result of the Congress conspiracy to tarnish the image of LDF Government and the Home Ministry. He also said that Congress should end the propaganda that CPM was behind the violence.

“SFI leaders were beaten up by panchayth president John Jacob and Mandalam president Saju Pongalayi. Several flags and board of CPM were destroyed by the Congress workers,” he said.

Rajeev said that the panchayat president and followers after unleashing the attack were blocking the roads to hoodwink the people and foist false cases on rivals.
