THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KPCC president M.M. Hassan has landed in the soup following the alleged derogatory remarks made against former Congress MLA Sobhana George during a channel interview the other day.  Ms Sobhana George on Monday filed a complaint with the  Kerala Women's Commission, which   referred it  to  its  law officer.  However, Mr Hassan said his comments were twisted out of context by the social media.

Mr Hassan had told the TV channel that Chengannur Congress candidate D. Vijayakumar should have been fielded from there several decades ago.   He  was initially projected as the Congress candidate in 1991. But at the last minute,  Sobhana George got the seat,  Mr Hassan said.  However,  the  social media twisted his  words  that  there are certain things which he cannot reveal before the camera.   This offended  Ms Sobhana George who approached the KWC with the complaint.

Earlier,  KWC member Shahida Kamal said that  a case had been charged against Mr  Hassan for making derogatory remarks against Ms Sobhana.  But  within two hours, KWC issued another statement saying  that commission chairperson M. C. Josephine had referred the case to the law officer for his opinion. Mr  Hassan maintained that he had not made any offensive comments against Ms Sobhana George who had recently  joined  the Left camp.

“The KWC did not  seek my response and I  have not seen the  interview which was telecast.   The case  is  politically motivated in view of  the Chengannur by-election,”  he  said. Mahila Congress state president Lathika Subhash rallied behind  him  and said the controversy was unwarranted and that Mr Hassan had not made any derogatory comments against the woman leader. Ms  Sobhana George said she was made the  candidate in Chengannur in 1991 while she was the first woman general secretary of the state Youth Congress.  She was  not aware about the provocation for Mr  Hassan's  comment, she said. “I have looked upon  Hassan as a brother. But I will take up the issue before Congress president Rahul Gandhi,"  she  said.
