Mullappally Ramachandran to go ahead with party revamping
The revamping was postponed because of the general elections and as the groups did not want to upset the existing party committees.
Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran may try to revamp the party immediately after a new government is formed at the centre.
But he may face opposition from group leaders, Oommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala, if the party gets only 13-15 Lok Sabha seats.
The revamping was postponed because of the general elections and as the groups did not want to upset the existing party committees. A senior KPCC general secretary told DC that only Mullappally wanted to restructure the party now.
"Mullappally wants a new team under him so that he can lead the party in the local bodies elections in 2020 followed by Assembly elections in 2021. But the group leaders will block his move citing the Assembly by-elections to be held within six months," he said.
Mullappally has already hinted that the size of the jumbo committees will be reduced. The present working presidents, K. Sudhakaran and Kodikunnil Suresh, will step down if they win in Kannur and Mavelikara respectively. Former Wayanad MP, the late M. I. Shanavas, was also a working president.
The Mahila Congress and several senior women leaders had protested against ignoring women while the working presidents were appointed. Many Congress leaders, including women, had been lobbying for the working presidents' posts even during the campaigning.
